Psalm 73:28 – “But it is good for me to draw near to God.”
Because of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden, it is not in our nature to want to be nearer to God. Sin had separated us from that desire or need to be in fellowship with God our Father.
In our separation from God through sin, we not only lost the image of God, but we also lost our communion or fellowship with Him. A prime example of who we were prior to Salvation is the prodigal son. We had gone out into a far country. Not only were we far from God, we did not even have a desire to be near to Him.
Today, many have shut God out of their hearts and their company. He is never mentioned of them. They have removed themselves far from Him. They have said in their hearts, “let Him be far from me.”
If there ever was a time to draw nearer to God, the time is now!
The psalmist says “but is is good for me to draw near to God.” Is this your desire on this morning? Do you desire to be in the Lord’s presence this morning. Do you desire to feel His loving arms wrapped all around you in the midst of all this evil that is going on in the world.
We are living in perilous times. The days are evil! Jesus warned of such an hour. There are troubles on all sides and things are going to just get worse. I must repeat this: IF THERE EVER WAS A TIME TO DRAW NEARER TO GOD, THE TIME IS NOW!!!!!!
In Mark 13:7-8 Jesus clearly speaks these words- But when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be troubled; for such things must happen, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be earthquakes in various places, and there will be famines and troubles. These are the beginnings of sorrows, but the end shall not be yet.
Jesus was warning back there of what it would be like in the last days — and we are living in that time today.
This warning is a sign to inform us that NOW IS THE TIME TO DRAW NEARER TO GOD! NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE GOD # 1 IN OUR LIFE! NOW IS THE TIME OF SALVATION!
Imagine in your mind for a moment, resting in the arms of Jesus, our Comforter, our Father. Imagine the peace, joy and love you feel just in that thought as you close your eyes and meditate on Him.
Isn’t it nearer to Jesus is where you desire to be on this morning? Is nearer to God is what you are yearning to be this morning? Speak to Him, ask Him to draw nearer to you and He will do it!
Jesus offers us that warm, loving place of rest and peace that can not be found in anything or anyone else. It is a place that I often desire and a place where I often go. Sometimes just to rest, but most of the time after being battered and bruised daily from the issues of life. Drawing nearer to the Father daily is where I find comfort, sanity, peace, joy, rest and most of all, LOVE!
If you have not been drawing nearer to God daily, start today! You will enjoy it and you will definitely look forward to it at every opportunity. You will acquire a desire to always want to be in that place with Him!
In our text, the psalmist says it is good for (me). That is personal. What is good for me? (to draw near to God). There is a part I play in being in God’s presence. I have to act. I have to move from sin to Salvation. Then, I am able to draw near to God with a clean heart. God must become my goal in life. It must be my desire to draw nearer to Him. In doing this, it is not only good for me, but it pleases God.
As Christians, it is our duty to draw nearer to God. It is in God’s presence through prayer and His Word where we find the strength and power needed to survive in this world that is plague with so much evil. It is our duty to draw nearer to God.
How are we able to draw nearer to God? By nature we stand in opposition to God, according to Colossians 1:21-22 which declares – Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.
As believers in Christ, we can boldly approach the throne of Grace where we will find grace and mercy in the time of need. We can drawer nearer to God there. It is through our Mediator, Jesus the Christ. He is our High Priest, the Veil who stand between us and divine justice. The bible declares that when Jesus died on the cross, the curtain in the temple was torn in 2. We now have direct access to the presence of a Holy God through Christ, our Savior.
Oh, thanks be to God that He has given us a promise and assurance once we have placed our faith and trust in Him. Romans 8:1 declares on this morning – There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY!!! YOU SHOULD BE SHOUTING RIGHT THERE!!!
When we come to church we should come for the purpose of worshiping God and hearing what He has to say to us from His Word. This is an area where God really works, when we come to worship Him — whether it be in church, at home, or wherever we may be, we can draw near to Him.
Some worship God and draw nigh to Him while they drive to work. As they sit in traffic, they spend the time drawing close to the Lord. Their car is their prayer closet where they go to pray. They have a mind to draw near to God and use the time that is at their disposal to do so. Are you using every opportunity to draw nearer to God?
Always remember, when we draw nigh to God we need to come in sincerity, with a pure heart. We don’t want to be like those in the days of Isaiah who came to God with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him. In Isaiah 29:13 – The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men. Do not let the Lord say this concerning you!
God will work when we draw near to Him in truth. We will find that He will speak to us. It may be in a still small voice — or it may even be audibly, but He will speak!
Is it your desire to draw nearer to God on today? I can only hope and pray so. None of us know when our clock of life will stop.
I want to leave you with this old familiar hymn that my parents and the saints of old used to sing from the pureness of their hearts. I hope this is your prayer and song on today also.
I am Thine, O Lord, I have heard Thy voice, And it told Thy love to me; But I long to rise in the arms of faith, And be closer drawn to Thee. Draw me nearer, nearer, blessed Lord, To the cross where Thou hast died; Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer, blessed Lord; To Thy precious, bleeding side.Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord, By the pow’r of grace divine; Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine. O the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend, When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God, I commune as friend with friend! There are depths of love that I yet may know; Ere Thee face to face I see; There are heights of joy that I yet may reach; Ere I rest in peace with Thee.
OH, THE JOY OF THE LORD’S PRESENCE. I FEEL HIM RIGHT NOW!
As I sing this song out loud, I feel the presence of the Lord comforting, strengthening, loving and recognizing my presence with Him as I draw nearer to him through this song.
Saints, I love Him on today! I Praise Him, I Glorify Him, I Magnify Him for truly He is worthy of all my praises!
It is in His presence where Miracles take place. It is in His presence where shackles are broken, It is in His presence where the spirit of heaviness is lifted.
Isn’t this a place you would love to be on this morning? Scripture declares that it is good for you to draw nearer to God. Will you do it on today? IF YOU DO, YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME.
GOD BLESS AND TELL THE LORD THANK YOU FOR HIS EVERLASTING PRESENCE!
DRAW ME NEARER LORD TO THEE! IS THIS YOUR PRAYER?
I love you all with the love of Christ.
